Carrying out my GAME plan

So sorry this post is late. I did not see the assignment on the application page. I think that any blogging assignments should be put on the same page of our discussions seeing as they have the same due date. Just saying!!

In order for my GAME Plan to continue I need to look at the type of resources I will need in order for my plan to be carried out, I will also need to look at any additional information that I need, and lastly, what steps have I been able to successfully make during this process.

The first performance indicator that I will be working on is 3a: Demonstrate fluency in technology systems and the transfer of current knowledge to new technologies and situations, will require me to learn new technologies and then transfer that information over to my students. Currently we are on summer vacation, so the ability to transfer any new information will have to wait until school starts. Taking classes through Walden University is giving me the opportunity to work with new technologies and to become fluent in them, so that I will feel more confident when I teach my students in the fall. As far as resources, I will be using the Internet quite extensively because the majority of the programs that I will be using are located on the Internet. The steps that I have been able to make to date are learning about new technologies through Walden University.

The second performance indicator that I will be working on is 3b: Collaborate with students, peers, parents, and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation. This step cannot really take place until I get back into school. Once I get back into school, the resources that I will need in order for my plan to be carried out will be to literally hunt down my IT guy and put a date on the calendar for him and I to create a website for me. By doing this, I will be able to start corresponding with students, parents, and an online community early in the school year. Additional resources that I might need will be the help of fellow colleagues. To date I have not taken any steps to make this GAME plan successful because it is summer and I don’t believe that my IT guy wants a call over the summer. Even though we need to invite him and his family over to dinner (we are good friends), I will wait until school starts.

  1. Erika,

I like that you listed Walden as a resource. I wasn't necessarily a technology person before beginning this program, so it's safe to say I would know NOTHING about any of the great tools we've learned about if it wasn't for Walden. Like our course text states, it's cool to use technology to learn more about technology, which is an idea we should all keep in the back of our mind when we're working on our GAME plans.

  2. Hi Erika,

With the hundreds of free online website hosts out there, why do you need your IT guy to make you one? Is it a district policy that your IT guy has to do it? I had my students create Google sites last year and looked into webs.com this year. It seems like this is something you might be able to do over the summer and build exactly the way you want it. With Rich Text editors it is pretty easy to build your site. What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG). Might be an interesting thing for you to do because then you would be able to have your students build their own too.

    Just an idea.

    Cheers!

  3. Sean,

Yes, it is a district policy. They want all teachers to be on one common site, so we have to create a page to put on that site. If it were up to me, I would do it myself and make it really cool.

  4. Erika,

I'm with you. Many of my steps towards my goals will come around the start of school. I am also learning about many technologies to be used in the classroom through Walden. I have also learned about a few more through my district's resources and instructional coaches. I'm thinking about creating a group within my school so that my peers can share their sites with each other. It would be really cool to have the tools used along with the people that know how to use them in each building. This could be helpful.

  5. Erika,

Why doesn't your IT department just automate the creation then? Ours functions kind of like yours and it doesn't seem very forward thinking sometimes. It seems like they would build the skeleton for everyone and then teachers would just have to learn how to customize what they wanted to.

I am with you, if it was up to me to design the plan, it would be pretty cool (I think) but I don't get to make the rules (yet) I just get to play by them...or not. ;-)

  6. Erika,
I know it is kind of tough in the summer to get a hold of IT people, and I think that your plan as soon as school starts is good.
Have you entertained the idea of using facebook for a website or reference point? I am setting mine up in another week or so after I saw how well it worked for a fellow teacher. She did not put up any really personal information, but set it up as Ms. Baldwin's Class. This gave students and parents both a chance to keep up with class announcements, due dates, reading, etc. We figured most students and now parents are already on facebook, so why not? There again it may take school approval from you principal, but its technology that both students and parents are already using, so why not embrace it?
I also think this is a good time, like you said to become fluent with some programs that we have learned about through Walden, that way when fall gets here, you could have students get rolling with things like Voicethreads and website recognition. Creating a "get to know you," Voicethread is something I am entertaining for an early project too.
    Just some ideas.
